Warm-UpWatch the video on the Statue of Liberty and immigrants. Take at least 10 notes. We will discuss afterwards. SimulationToday, we will be attempting to recreate the Ellis Island experience as seen by immigrants in the early 1900's. Pay attention to instructions. For today to be a success, adherence to instruction is absolutely imperative. Translation: you gotta listen, 'cause today's gonna be awesome!
Step one: You will be given an identity. This is who you will be for our simulation. If it says you are a husband/wife/daughter/brother, you need to find your family. Once you have your family, you will need to decide what you are taking with you. Choose what to pack in luggage. Think about utility, future work, momentos from home, technologically appropriate, etc.
For the next part, you will need to pay close attention to the instructions. Before you can enter the country, you must go through 3 immigration officials. Once you see the third official, he/she will tell you where you need to go: Hospital, America, or Back Home. Discussion Questions: Immigration officials: explain why certain people were sent home and not admitted into the US. Immigrants: for those of you who made it through the process, where did you most likely settle? What work would you probably do? Immigrants: how did you feel going through the process at Ellis Island? Immigrant officials: how did you feel? How do you think your experience as an immigrant or immigration official was different than what the real people experienced? Take the US Citizenship Test!
