Constructed Response PracticeAs President of the United States I have concluded that I should now ask the Congress, on its part, to join in affirming the national determination that all such attacks will be met, and that the United States will continue in its basic policy of assisting the free nations of the area to defend their freedom. President Johnson's Message to Congress, August 5, 1964 The policy of the previous administration not only resulted in our assuming the primary responsibility for fighting the war, but even more significantly did not adequately stress the goal of strengthening the South Vietnamese so that they could defend themselves when we left. After 5 years of Americans going into Vietnam, we are finally bringing men home. By December 15, over 60,000 men will have been withdrawn from South Vietnam including 20 percent of all of our combat forces. President Nixon's Speech, November 3, 1969 The Vietnam War spanned the terms of three American Presidents. Contrast the strategies of the two Presidents quoted above giving examples of how their ideas played out during the war. Notes for Monday: 1960's Culture and Counterculture |
